WEEK 17

September 26, 2007

This week’s box is extra special because it was packed on Tuesday night by Genine herself. Normally two wonderful volunteers come to box up the shares on Wednesday Mornings, but one is preparing for a trip to Antarctica and one has an unavoidable appointment. I adore them both and wish them well always. I don’t especially mind this wild Tuesday night, as it feels like the night before Christmas and I’m wrapping up a hundred gifts for all of you. After a morning of harvesting, and afternoon of washing, a night of packing shares seems just right, a fine conclusion and a job well done. Oh, and I had a lovely break between wash and pack to attend Jonas football game at Tumwater Middle School. They won, and a good time was had by all. I know I just printed this recipe last week, but I’m going to do it again because you get leeks this week!!
I love washing the produce. I love harvesting the produce. I love planting it and weeding it and every other thing there is that we do here. It’s always just a hard choice about which incredibly fun and amazing thing I should do first.
One day this week I was washing carrots and then came in to do a round of business calls, one to a chef. We exchanged the usual pleasantries including what each of us was doing right then, and I described how perfectly simple the job of washing carrots is, first they are dirty, then you line them up and hose them off, turn them over, do it again and then they are clean. So simple, and after the first hundred or so, becomes so zen. There is no more complex decision making to do, the technique is what it is, and you just keep doing it until it’s done. The chef liked the story and said, great, why don’t you add ten pounds of zen, I mean carrots to my order for tomorrow. I said no problem-o, will do.
