Spring News from the farm

March 02, 2010

Spring News from the farm: I’ve had my first traffic jam in the start house!! Too many trays of seeds trying to grow up in the same space, someone has to move on out to the hoop houses. Lettuce and Spinach are on their way into the ground out there. Colin is dividing his time between tractor work to prepare the fields, fence work to protect the crops from those pesky deer, and the neverending list of stuff that just needs doing.

We are so grateful to the forty CSA members who have already signed up (and paid!). You guys are really floating the boat this time of year. And our hearts are touched by all of the financial aid fund donations we have received. The financial aid fund is a way to offer help to anyone who wants to buy a share but can’t afford to. So we take donations all the time and give them out as needed. For instance, we get a call from someone who wants a share but can only afford to pay 300, then we use 200 from the fund to pay the difference. This works to help many people for many different amounts of money. Thus far we have more than one thousand dollars available in the fund. If no one needs it, we will use it to buy shares for the food bank. Thank you so much for your generosity.

I think one great way for you to get your Kirsop Farm shirts is to meet me at the South of the Sound Community Farm Land Trust Annual Meeting, Potluck and Dance this Friday, March 5, at the South Bay Grange Hall. The event goes from 6-10 PM and is located at 3918 Sleater Kinney Rd. NE. It should be a fun evening with presentations, kids area, and a raffle with great prizes. For more information call 360-402-0302. I hope to see you all there!
